Vinicius's backheel assist moment. |
At Lincoln Financial Field, the backheel assist for Federico Valverde's second goal instantly reminded fans of Guti's legendary moment when he passed for Karim Benzema to score against Deportivo in February 2010.
In the 47th minute, Vinicius got the ball close to the penalty area, then broke through the middle. When everyone thought he would shoot from the right corner, Real's number 7 suddenly made a delicate backheel, sending the ball to Valverde's feet. The Uruguayan midfielder did not miss the opportunity, shooting diagonally past the goalkeeper, doubling the gap for "Los Blancos" in an unmarked position.
Vinicius had also opened the scoring in the 39th minute after a well-coordinated play with Jude Bellingham. The English midfielder had a great through ball, putting Vinicius in a good position. After a technical sprint, he eliminated two defenders and fired a dangerous shot from outside the box, leaving goalkeeper Zawieschitzky completely helpless.
Vinicius marked his return to poor form, thereby bringing inspiration and a timely difference to Real Madrid in an important match.
In Group H, Real Madrid secured top spot after a 3-0 win over RB Salzburg. They will face Juventus in the round of 16 of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup™.
